Now Accepting Applications.png

Are you passionate about history, architecture, and preserving the cultural heritage of our community? If so, joining the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) might be the perfect opportunity for you.

Applications are now being accepted for two vacated terms, both ending in June 2027.

What is the Historic Preservation Commission?

The Historic Preservation Commission is a local government body responsible for protecting and preserving historic sites, buildings, and districts. The HPC plays a crucial role in maintaining the architectural integrity and cultural significance of landmarks, ensuring that future generations can appreciate and learn from them.

Responsibilities of the HPC

As a somewhat new commission, members of the HPC are still establishing themselves and will need to identify the community's goals for historic preservation in Carthage. However, some responsibilities of HPC's across the state are:

  1. Reviewing Applications for Changes: The commission evaluates proposals for alterations, demolitions, or new constructions within historic districts.
  2. Advising Property Owners: HPC members provide guidance to property owners on appropriate preservation techniques and materials.
  3. Conducting Surveys: Identifying and documenting historic properties and districts.
  4. Public Education: Promoting awareness and appreciation of local history through workshops, lectures, and publications.
  5. Grant Administration: Overseeing and distributing funds for preservation projects.
How to Join the HPC
  1. Understand the Requirements: Members of the commission must reside within the town limits of the Town of Carthage and shall have demonstrated education, experience, special interest, or a combination thereof, in historic preservation, history, architecture, architectural history, archaeology, cultural anthropology, planning, or related field.
  2. Attend Meetings: The HPC meets at least once a month for their regular business meeting, most often on a weekday evening after 6pm. Special meetings may also be called.
  3. Submit an Application: Use the online application form below or print/return an application(PDF, 497KB)  to the Carthage Town Hall. Be sure to highlight your relevant experience and enthusiasm for preservation.
  4. Prepare for an Interview: If selected for an interview, be ready to discuss your interest in historic preservation, your understanding of the commission’s role, and any ideas you have for future projects during an interview with the Board of Commissioners. Interviews take place during open, public meetings where members of the public and town staff may also be in attendance.
  5. Get Appointed: Appointments are made by a majority vote of the Board of Commissioners following the interviews or at the next regular meeting if the Board wishes to have more time to consider the applicants. Once appointed, you’ll be asked to take an Oath of Office, receive training and start participating in meetings and projects.
