Boil Water Advisory Now Lifted

The Boil Water Advisory that was in effect from Sunday, October 14th is now lifted. Carthage Public Works Department has had water samples from 6 different locations around the community tested and all tests are negative for harmful bacteria. The advisory is now lifted, and water is safe to consume. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

PUBLIC NOTICE: CARTHAGE WATER SYSTEM DISRUPTION AND ADVISORY IN EFFECT

At 2:30 A.M. on October 15th, 2023, the Town of Carthage began receiving calls of low water pressure from higher elevation residences in town. Town staff immediately initiated the emergency water interconnection and began searching throughout the distribution system for possible causes. The Carthage water plant operator arrived and discovered the High Service Pump had malfunctioned and lost power. 

After restarting the pump, it was discovered that an 8” water main failure had occurred approximately ¼ mile north of Little River Boulevard on HWY 15/501. Per State regulation, the water plant will begin bacteria sampling immediately and on an increased basis. We will keep everyone informed of the results. 

*SYSTEM PRESSURE/BOIL WATER ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT*

Water customers in the Town of Carthage, Moore County, are experiencing periods of low pressure and outages in the distribution system due to a combination of an 8” water main failure and pump failure.  Periods of low or no pressure in the distribution system increase the potential for back siphonage and introduction of bacteria into the water system.

Therefore, when water service is restored, consumers are advised to boil all water used for human consumption (including drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation) or use bottled water. Vigorous boiling for one (1) minute should kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water.     

Water customers are strongly urged to conserve water whenever possible.  

This advisory remains in effect until further written notification is issued.
